AutumnWelcome to the fall season!

As the weather is getting a bit cooler, please take care to add some additional layers. As Chinese lore emphasizes, it is important to keep your neck, shoulders and feet warm!

  • In response to the termination of the Trillium College outreach massage program, I am still in negotiation with the college to resurrect it. I will keep you all posted on my progress. In the meantime, they are still willing to take ACAS clients with a discount for their student clinics at a rate of $15.00 per hour. If you are making an initial appointment, please do so through myself (Kenneth Poon). If you have been there before, please ring the college directly.
  • Buddies in Badtimes theatre has a play showing right now entitled ‘Pig’. It has been very well reviewed and is an entertaining glimpse of the community in its promiscuous heyday. I dare to suggest to you all to go and be entertained!
  • We had put ACAS Educational and Wellness Retreat on August 30, 2013 to September 01, 2013 and we had over thirty clients participating. Lots of fun, socializing and education took place over the weekend! Many thanks to our presenters and our generous sponsors – Viiv Healthcare and Jenssen,  all of whom made this possible. Our next workshop will be held in October, HIV Aging and Comorbidity. Please watch for the invitation from your support workers.
  • On Sunday, October 20, 2013, the Scotia Bank run will take place. It is a fundraiser for ACAS. We have set up different teams and are asking for your generousity in supporting us. Every dollar counts in fundraising and no sponsorship is too small. All the money that we raise with this effort will go straight back into ACAS and the services it provides. There is a lot of misconceptions around Homeopathy and I would like to take this opportunity to share the following article, prepared by Lisa Maddalena Msc.  Many thanks to Lisa for sharing this.

Homeopathic medicine was founded in the 1700’s by Dr. Samuel Hahnmann and is currently widely practiced in Europe by both Complementary Health Practitioners and Medical Doctors. In these days of modern medicine, it remains a much misunderstood medicinal art, that takes no explanation for someone who has experienced its powerful effects. It is based on energetic principles that are similar to acupuncture, where the treatment is used to help stimulate the body’s own healing functions in order to reestablish balance and health in an ill patient.

While practicing medicine, Hahnmann realized that when administering drugs or medicinal herbs to a healthy person the reaction produced symptoms that matched the symptoms of a certain illnesses. In discovering this he founded the basis of homeopathy, which is that the most successful medicine is one which produces the same symptom profile when administered to a healthy individual.

He called this “the law of similars,” stating that “like should be treated by like.”

In order to be precise in utilizing this theory the practitioner must study the patient as a whole, since no single symptom is sufficient in determining a remedy. Therefore, when homeopathy is performed properly, the patient visit entails a very extensive interview, where the practitioner attempts to gather as much information about the patient at that time, even if it may seem irrelevant to the presenting concern. This is because no medicine simply targets one area of the body and therefore the best medicine is specific to the person as a whole. Once the appropriate medicinal substance is determined, the homeopath uses a diluted form, which utilizes the energetic properties of that substance to restore the patients health, with no chance of toxicity. In doing this, the physician is able to produce the ideal cure, which is fast, gentle and permanent, with no long lasting side effects.

Explaining the principles of Homeopathy, and how exactly it works is extremely difficult. It is for this reason only that science and modern medicine has had a hard time excepting its powerful effects. However, as stated above, it is self-explanatory to those that have used it and is therefore worth a try.
